Powerful Questions for Leaders, no. 28

Loyalty or Integrity – Which is more important to the success of your team, your organization, and you as an individual?

In many organizations, loyalty to the company, its shareholders, the president, or the CEO is held up as the ultimate virtue.

On the surface, this seems like a solid approach, but what do you do when you’re asked to sacrifice your integrity to maintain loyalty?

Stephen R. Covey said, “Loyalty must not be a higher value than integrity; In fact, real integrity is loyalty. You want your doctor to tell you the truth, even if you don’t want to hear it”

These situations are the true tests of a leader. What will you do when pressured to compromise your integrity to maintain loyalty?

Will you attempt to influence the plan so that you can maintain both integrity AND loyalty? Will you go along with the plan to save your position in the organization? Will you uphold your integrity in the face of the likely personal pain and suffering?

What else could you do? How will each option affect the outcomes for the organization, for your team, and for yourself?
