How did you handle it the last time you made a mistake at work?
Everybody makes mistakes. It’s how we respond to them, both our own and our employees’, that shapes the culture, success, and failure of the organization.
It might not feel like it in the moment, but mistakes are a gift. They give us the opportunity to correct an error, learn something new, and prevent the error from occurring in the future. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to make our workplaces a safe place for employees to mistakes and to model learning and accountability when we screw up ourselves. Without mistakes, the organization cannot learn, grow, and prosper.
The next time you make a mistake, think about what response you want to model. Your employees are watching, and deciding how to handle their next mistake. How would you want them to respond?
