How do you demonstrate empathy at work?
In Harvard Business Review, Ernest Wilson says, ” … empathy is most lacking among middle managers and senior executives: the very people who need it most because their actions affect such large numbers of people.”
The world of work today is much different than it was as recently as 10 years ago. More and more, we rely on unique human skills and behaviors (as opposed to machines and reproducibility) to push our products and services ahead of the competition.
And people need different things to be at their best. Both different from machines and different for each individual. The best way to know and deliver what each individual needs is to connect with them, to build strong, supportive relationships, one at a time. You need to understand where they’re coming from, what gets them up in the morning, what drives them to perform. And then you need to deliver it.
So what do you do to truly understand your employees? To empathize with their unique situations? To support their efforts, dreams, and aspirations?
