What do you do an on ongoing basis to hone your craft as a leader?
How does your organization support your growth on this, one of the most important, but typically least structured development paths?
Just like technical skills, leadership skills can be taught (and learned). The “born leader” is a misnomer. While some people might find the role more comfortable than others, everyone can learn the skills to be successful in the role, so long as they have the desire and opportunity.
Unfortunately, many organizations don’t have a formal leadership development program. And even at those that do, the program is often poorly structured, little more than a cliche. These programs provide little guidance and expectation setting, leaving leaders to face the journey towards leadership excellence on their own. Is it any wonder we are facing a crisis of leadership, not only in our companies, but also throughout our country and even the world?
What can you do to influence the leadership development program at your organization for the better? And what will you do to hone your own leadership skills while you wait for the “official” program to catch up?
