Theme Song Thursdays: December Again!

We spend so much of our precious time and energy on our work. Forty hours per week (often many more), plus late nights checking our emails and early morning conference calls. We respond to Teams messages during our toddlers’ bath time, sneak a peak at our emails during our teenagers’ basketball games, and scroll through LinkedIn at the dinner table.

What have we become? And for what? This holiday season in particular, more and more of us find ourselves underemployed, or unemployed, some beginning to wonder if we’ll ever work again.

December again I hope you know
It’s time to take out all your mistle toe

What do you say we put it all aside for just one month? Just 31 days where we turn off the notifications, put the phone down when we walk in the door, and leave the laptop at the office. What would it take to get us all to do this?

And sit with old friends and listen
As the stories roll off of their lips
Time will freeze from tickin’
You’ll wish you never had to call it quits

Imagine the simple joy and delight we’ll experience when we are truly living the moment, feeling the love of our family and friends, smelling the cold, crisp, snowy air, hearing the fire crackle, and seeing the twinkling lights through our children’s eyes.

It’s december again light the fire
Stay warm inside if you desire

Because why are we putting ourselves through all of this pain and suffering if it isn’t so that we can enjoy the fruits or our labor? To share our time and energy with the ones we love, doing things that fill us with joy and purpose?

Feel the glory and halleluja
Of the holy land’s mysteries
Let the music sink right through ya
Sinkin’ down until you find your peace

So this December, what will you do to unplug from your work? To truly be present in the moment with those you care about, doing things that you all enjoy?

It’s December again I hope you find
Whatever you need to ease your worried mind
And if theres somebody at your window
In the cold the dark and the rain
Won’t you let em in and wont you call them a friend

What will it take for you to put your work worries aside, to invite in your friends and neighbors, and to remember that life is about so much more than spreadsheets, departmental budgets, and ROI calculations.

After all, it’s December again
After all it’s December again
After all, it’s December again

If you want to reunite with your true self, the one that finds joy in the simple things that used to bring light into your life, and let go of the one that’s “always on,” and glued to your work phone, I want to work with you. Let’s remove the work shackles and release you back into your life. You deserve it

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Amen
