Today’s song is dedicated to all of the little guys who ran for office on Tuesday. The ones who stood up, stood proud, and actually did something to make change in their communities. Whether you ran for school board, city council, or dog warden, we thank you for your dedication to making our world a better place.
Here we go!
Aw yeah!
Well, maybe it’s the common curse
Maybe things get bad before they get worse
I don’t wanna become someone
Who can’t live up to what I already done
Isn’t it interesting how we need to get to such a low place before we’re fed up enough to do something to change our situation? Why is it that we just won’t speak up, stand out, or so much as blink until things are so bad that we wonder if we’ll ever recover?
Don’t keep it just to figure it out
When it rains and pours, and then it runs out
I was crying on the bathroom floor
And just when I thought I could take no more
I don’t know the answer to this question, of course, but I find it even more fascinating that when we do finally decide to act, the voice inside us is surprisingly strong. Before you know it, we’re gaining ground, kicking and scratching our way out of the hole we so recently felt trapped in.
Well, here comes a comeback
The kid is back, is back on track
And there goes my hero
He’s an underdog, he’s coming out on top
Take yesterdays elections as an example. All over the country, regular people just like you and me finally got fed up enough to step into the ring, ready to stand tall for the rights of their neighbors and community members. And all over the country those same underrepresented and lesser known candidates won.
He’s coming out on top
And everybody loves a comeback
So come on back, now, comeback, comeback
Everybody loves the underdog
We should all be inspired by these brave souls. They will be the ones to pull us back from the brink, to provide the tools necessary for us all to rebuild our broken communities, and rebalance the power in our communities and society as a whole.
Everybody loves an underdog
Singing that’s my dog, that’s my dog
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
That’s my dog
So who is your “dog”? That is, who is the person in your community who you see tirelessly working to make things better for us all, putting it all out their on the line, taking the heat, and keeping us moving forward anyway? How will you emulate them? And when will you start?
Come on, come back, come back
That’s my dog
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
That’s my dog
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
That’s my dog
If you’re ready to use your power for good, to make your community or workplace stronger, more resilient, and more representative of all of it’s members, I want to work with you. Let’s follow the lead of the people who ran for office this week. Let’s find our voices. And then let’s build something better for all of us.
