Theme Song Thursdays: Everybody Dance Now!

I don’t know about things on your end, but things have been tough over here lately. Between the record breaking cold and snow, the sluggish economy, the constant barrage of negative headlines in the news and in our local communities, the ever increasing cost of living, and the stress that comes along with keeping a family healthy and a household running, it seems like the hits just keep coming.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself, your family, and your community is to just step away from it all for a bit. Put your burden down and reconnect with the joy and happiness you’ve let slip away amid all the chaos.

Give me the music
Give me the music
Everybody dance now

In my business coaching and consulting work, I share a lot about the value of having “slack” in any human system. In agile circles, we call this “sustainable pace,” which the signatories defined as “Agile processes promote sustainable development. The sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain a constant pace indefinitely.”

Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Everybody dance now

What we all mean by this is that we should strive not to load ourselves and our employees to 100% of our capacity (or more), but to leave “space” in our schedules for contemplation, rest, and, recreation.

Here is the dome, back with the bass
The jam is live in effect and I don’t waste time
On the mike with a dope rhyme
Jump to the rhythm, jump, jump to the rhythm jump

Why do you suppose that our best ideas come to us when we are in the shower or walking the dog? It’s because we’ve given our brains a break, moved our focus toward something less strenuous. This is when our brains do their best work, inventing wildly creative and innovative solutions.

And I’m here to combine
Beats and lyrics to make your shake your pants
Take a chance, come on and dance
Guys grab a girl, don’t wait, make her twirl

But so many of us spend so much of our lives in a perpetual state of busyness that our brains never get the chance to recover nor to start to do what they do best — finding patterns and new ideas for capitalizing on them.

It’s your world and I’m just a squirrel
Tryin’ to get a nut to move your butt
To the dance floor, so you what’s up
Hands in the air, come on say yeah

How much “slack” or “dancing” do you have in your weekly schedule? Here’s a handy way to tell: Ask yourself how your week is divided up? What percentage of you week is spent on each of the types of activities you do? For example, how much of your week is spent working? Tending to your family? Your household? On Recreation? What else do you do with your time? Go ahead and jot it down on a scrap of paper. I’ll wait.

Everybody over here, everybody over there
The crowd is live and I pursue this groove
Party people in the house
Move, move
(Let your mind, put me on line)er twirl

Now tally up your percentages. What’s the total? If it’s greater than 100% you’re over capacity. Vulnerable moment: the first time I did this I was over 100% before I had even accounted for sleeping!

Come on let’s sweat, baby
Let the music take control
Let the rhythm move you
Sweat, sweat

Let the music take control
Let the rhythm move you

Looking at your percentages, where are you spending the majority of your time? Is it on tasks that fill you up or on ones that break you down? What could you shift to make room for some “slack”?

Everybody dance now

Even better, what would you do with your slack time? The sky’s the limit here. If you had all the time in the world, how would you use it? Would it be on a favorite hobby? In nature? With friends and loved ones?

So what will you do to free up some time to dance? What will you change about your day-to-day life to rest your brain and get back in touch with who you really are? And when will you start?
