The current state of the job market is testing a lot of us. We were taught that if we worked hard and waited our turn, we, too , could have a life of luxury. But, somehow, we now find ourselves working harder than ever for less and less.
My friend the communist
Holds meetings in his RV
I can’t afford his gas
So I’m stuck here watching TV
Maybe we’ve been misled. Maybe the message we were raised on, the one that taught us to work ourselves nearly to death and to buy our way out of sadness, was never really meant to serve us. Maybe it was meant to serve someone else, someone who benefits when we overconsume.
I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I’m gonna tell ’em that I’ve got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame, I’m lookin’ up
I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna soak up the sun
Maybe what we really need to be doing is spending more time looking deep inside ourselves to uncover what we really, like really, want. Maybe we don’t need min-mansions, luxury cars, or the latest, most expensive cell phones. Maybe we could live even better, more satisfying lives without high-fashion clothing, exclusive club memberships, and signature cocktails.
I’ve got a crummy job
It don’t pay near enough
To buy the things it’d take
To win me some of your love
Because chances are we’re not doing all of this for ourselves. We’re likely doing it for others. For bosses and family members and friends who pressure us into it. Or maybe we’ve internalized a message that’s convinced us that our family members want this for us when all they really want is for us to be happy.
Every time I turn around
I’m lookin’ up, you’re lookin’ down
Maybe something’s wrong with you
That makes you act the way you do
Either way, chances are slim that we’re reaching our true potential if we’re too busy following someone else’s dream to ever reach our own.
I’m, I’m gonna soak up the sun
I’m gonna tell everyone to lighten up
I’m gonna tell ’em that I’ve got no one to blame
For every time I feel lame, I’m lookin’ up
So what do you really want? Is it a gated community, a personal chef, and a corner office? Or is it the time and focus necessary to build real, lasting, connection with your loved ones, friends, and neighbors?
I’m gonna soak up the sun
While it’s still free
Don’t have no master suite
But I’m still the king of me
You have a fancy ride, but, baby
I’m the one who has the key
If you’re ready to drop the charade, to stop chasing someone else’s dream and to finally reach for your own, I want to work with you.
Whether you want to travel the world, spend more time with your loved ones, make a difference in your community, escape to a secluded beach, or anything in between, your job should provide the means necessary to reach your goals, not the other way around. So let’s figure out what you really want and then let’s uncover the job that will help you get there. And then let’s go out there and get it together.
